60 pupils visit ‘Kathryn Thomas Shining Lights 2012’

60 pupils from Turlin Moor Community School descended on the ‘Kathryn Thomas Shining Lights 2012’ exhibition in Poole on Wednesday May 9.

For the majority of the school children, aged from nine to 11, it was the first time they had visited an art gallery and seen original oil paintings.

Established artist Kathryn was on-hand to discuss her inspirations, share thoughts and encourage opinions about her latest collection, inspired by the local area.

Kathryn said: “It was a pleasure having the children at my studio, to hear their thoughts and interpretations of my paintings. It is very important to me for my art to be accessible to everyone, whatever their age.”

Out of the 54 paintings on display, the children were invited to choose their favourite and discuss the reasons why they had picked it.

Kathryn explained: “I hope that by teaching children how to appreciate art from a young age, it will be a passion that stays with them throughout their life.”

‘Shining Lights 2012’ is open every day to the public from Sunday May 6 to Monday June 4, 11am to 7pm on West Quay Road and admission is free.

Art’s still a Shining Light

Sales of Poole-based artist Kathryn Thomas’ new collection ‘Shining Lights 2012’ are proving that original art continues to be seen as a good investment in difficult times.

Four oil paintings were sold on the opening day and since then more than a hundred art lovers and seven dogs have been through the Poole studio doors.

The show, which runs until Monday June 4, features 54 interpretations of the natural light displays across Canford Cliffs and Poole Bay.

Kathryn said: “This is the first time I have based a whole collection on the one location and I am delighted to see ‘Shining Lights 2012’ has been so well received.”

Kathryn’s previous collections have been on show in London, Bristol, Bordeaux, the Netherlands, Texas and Reykjavik.

Kathryn added: “Over the past few weeks, I have enjoyed meeting people from the local area and hearing their interpretations of my work. I am looking forward to meeting many more people and hearing many more opinions over the weeks to come.”

During the exhibition, visitors are invited to choose their favourite painting, with ‘Wake in the hope’ (91cm x 142cm; £3,375), currently in pole position. The studio on West Quay Road is open every day from 11am to 7pm for the public to view the collection and to meet Kathryn herself.

Shining a light on Kathryn Thomas Original Oil Paintings

Poole-based artist Kathryn Thomas is celebrating the launch of her new collection by hosting her longest exhibition, ‘Kathryn Thomas Shining Lights 2012’, from Sunday May 6 to Monday June 4 at her studio on West Quay Road.

Every day for a whole month, the studio will be open to the public from 11.00am to 7.00pm. Inspired by a variety of natural light shows across Canford Cliffs and Poole Bay, ‘Shining Lights’ will exhibit over 30 oil paintings illustrating the changing light and its impact upon the land, sea and sky.

The artwork of Kathryn Thomas hangs on the walls of collectors all across the world from Iceland to Australia, but this is the first time in her 25-year career that Kathryn has created an entire collection focused on one location.

Kathryn Thomas explains: “Since relocating from Bristol to Poole, I’ve become fascinated by the stunning surroundings of my new environment and I’m excited about the challenge of conveying these sometimes majestic sometimes quiet sights through my art to a new audience. On a universal level, through painting I hope to encourage people to be aware of the power of nature and to realise our fleeting relationship with this planet.”

Though inspired by the Dorset coastline, the setting of her paintings will not be easily recognisable. Kathryn aims to surprise by using different techniques of application to make the image appear different each time the viewer looks at it, depending on their mood or perspective. Kathryn will be at the studio throughout the exhibition to answer queries, share thoughts and listen to opinions regarding her new collection.

Kathryn adds: “I am looking forward to sharing the next stage of my career with the public through the ‘Shining Lights’ exhibition this spring.”
