Poole Harbour Commissioners’ (PHC) two marinas, Poole Quay Boat Haven and Port of Poole Marina, have been acknowledged for their environmental credentials and awarded ‘The Green Blue’ during this year’s Tullet Prebon London Boat Show.

On Wednesday January 16, Jim Stewart, chief executive of Poole Harbour Commissioners and Port of Poole Marina manager, John Binder received certificates for both marinas.

‘The Green Blue’ is a joint environmental initiative created by the RYA (Royal Yachting Association) and BMF (British Marine Federation) to promote the sustainable use of coastal and inland waters by boating and watersports participants, as well as the sustainable operation and development of the recreational boating industry.

Jim Stewart, chief executive of Poole Harbour Commissioners, said: “We are very proud to have received this award from The Green Blue. John and his staff have worked tirelessly to help raise awareness of important environmental issues amongst our berth holders, so it’s great to see their efforts recognised.”

John added: “We are confident that we are doing the best we can to minimise our impact on the environment and to help our berth holders and visitors do the same.”

Backed by a site visit and audit by The Green Blue, notable improvements have included the installation of a pump out facility, clearly signed recycling facilities for berth holders, motion sensors to minimise energy and water wastage in shower block facilities, and secure waste oil and fuel storage. Berth holders have also received awareness raising information on a range of topics from marine litter, oil and fuel spills and non-native invasive species; as well as free fuel collars to help them prevent splashes and spills when refuelling.

Jane Swan, The Green Blue’s Project Manager commented: “We are delighted to present certificates to Poole Quay Boat Haven and Port of Poole Marina to recognise the positive steps they have taken to make their sites environmentally sound and sustainable. Over 100 organisations have registered with the toolkit and we have completed over 180 site visits to marinas, harbours and clubs using the Marine Toolkit as a guide and it is very encouraging to see so many now taking their environmental responsibilities seriously.”
