Poole Harbour Commissioners has successfully commissioned a new navigation system making Poole Harbour the first port in the world to commercially adopt a 3D Vessel Traffic Monitoring System.

The unique C-Vu technology is specifically tailored to present an accurate real-time 3D solution for increased navigational safety in ports and harbours.

The system offers a higher level of situational awareness thereby enhancing Poole Harbour Commissioners efficient safety operation of marine traffic within their jurisdiction.

The technology provides complete flexibility in selecting viewpoints and perspectives, both above and below the water, of a vessel being monitored. It adds significant support in detecting dangers by employing collision and grounding predictions, assisting harbour control to monitor the spatial distance of moving vessels, particularly important during the rise and fall of tides.

Data from the system can be stored for up to 10 years and played back in full detail at any time, enabling analysis of marine incidents and adding value in claims investigations.

Commenting on the organisation’s latest 3D VTS installation, Poole Harbour Commissioners harbour master, Captain Brian Murphy, said: “As guardians of Europe’s largest natural harbour, it is Poole Harbour Commissioners responsibility to ensure we consider the best technology available to deliver an even higher level of navigational safety.

We are thrilled with the new C-Vu system, its 3D display of critical vessel movement information has helped us to understand in amazing clarity and flexibility the reality of what is actually happening above and below the water. It is clear that C-Vu is setting the future standard for vessel traffic systems, and we at Poole are pleased to be an early adopter of this enhancement to vessel monitoring technology.”

GeoVS CEO, Alastair MacDonald, added: “We are delighted to have been chosen by Poole Harbour Commissioners to install a C-Vu® 3D VTS system in their vessel traffic management centre. The highly positive feedback following the installation has confirmed our ability to deliver innovative technology that enhances operational safety, productivity and efficiency.”
