Haskins Garden Centre in Ferndown selected local resident Katie Pollock as the winner of its annual ‘name the rose’ competition.
The winning entry ‘Raspberry Delight’ was chosen over more than 400 entries to the competition. The rose is a deep pink colour, lightly scented, has a double flower and is of the patio variety.
Alasdair Urquhart, plant advisor at Haskins Garden Centre presented Katie with her Raspberry Delight rose. He said: “We were overwhelmed with the amount of high quality entries in this year’s competition, but Raspberry Delight was the stand out winner for us as we felt it suited the appearance of this delicate rose and fitted it perfectly.
“Patio roses are so versatile and they are grown in a large number of varieties and colours, suiting all garden areas.”
Roses flower from June to September and should be planted in an area where it is exposed to sunlight, but with partial shade as it is a hardy variety. It is expected to reach 50cm in height and attracts bees.
As part of Haskins’ Rose Festival, the Raspberry Delight (£9.99), along with 200 other types of roses are available to purchase till Thursday July 27, from Haskins Garden Centres in Ferndown in Dorset, West End in Southampton and Roundstone and Snowhill in West Sussex.
Mike Sokolowski, from David Austin Roses will also be visiting the West End centre on Wednesday June 21 and the Snowhill centre on Thursday June 22 to give a free talk about caring for roses.
