The Big Little Bake-off to kick-start series of events
The coffee cups will be clinking at three Churchill Retirement Living developments in the south as a series of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning events, in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support, are lined up.
Charitable owners and those interested in Churchill Retirement developments are being encouraged to brew up and have a cuppa at one of its developments to help the fight against cancer.
Last year more than 500 people, both residents and guests at Churchill Retirement Living’s developments, helped to raise more than £17,000 to fund vital cancer services and the firm is hoping this year’s coffee morning events will be a bigger success.
To kick-start the series of coffee mornings, the Dean Lodge development in Southbourne will be hosting ‘The Big Little Bake Off’ on September 27 from 10am. Owners at the development will have their baking skills tested as a class of children from Buckholme Towers School and Nursery in Parkstone will be visiting the Lodge to use their senses to look, taste, feel and smell each cake in order to crown one baker the 2013 winner.
Other coffee mornings will take place at 10.30am in the Owners’ Lounges at the Royal Lodge in Gillingham on 4 October and at Osbourne Lodge in Bournemouth on 8 October.
Churchill Retirement Living has agreed to donate £1 to Macmillan Cancer Support for every owner plus a further £1 for every owner who brings a friend as well as £5 for every visitor to the development (over 60). Local businesses are donating raffle prizes and funds raised will also be donated to the charity.
Spencer McCarthy, chairman at Churchill Retirement Living, says: “We all know people who have been affected by cancer and have received wonderful care and support from Macmillan nurses. The World’s Biggest Coffee Morning is a chance for everyone to show their appreciation.
“As a company we have taken part in the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning since 2009 and due to the sad loss of one of our colleagues to cancer back in 2010, we decided to make Macmillan our corporate fundraising charity with the aim to raise as much money and awareness as possible. The Big Little Bake Off with the children from Buckholme Towers School will be a great start to our coffee morning events.”
Since starting to fundraise five years ago for Macmillan the company has raised a total of £196,620.10, with £56,133.30 generated as a direct result of their World’s Biggest Coffee Morning events.
Elaine Bovey, Head of Fundraising at Macmillan Cancer Support, adds: “Macmillan Cancer Support exists to improve the lives of anyone affected by cancer – people who have cancer, their carers, families and friends. Because more and more people are living with cancer every day, our work is needed more than ever. That’s why we need firms like Churchill Retirement Living to support us and we are extremely grateful for its pro-active approach to a fundraising campaign.”
