Nuffield Health Bournemouth Hospital is hosting a free open evening to help people suffering from bunions, from 6.45pm on Tuesday June 16 at The Village Urban Resort.

Around 15 million people suffer from bunions in the UK and a staggering 85 per cent of these are women over 45. Becoming more painful and pronounced over time, bunions cause a lump to form on the inner edge of the big toe which can lead to problems with shoes.

The evening will begin with registration at 6.45pm, where tea and coffee will be served. Guests will be able to meet leading Orthopaedic consultants Mr Taylor and Mr Farrar, who will offer guidance and advice on treatment, together with an informal presentation.

The consultants will also discuss a range of conditions affecting ankles, feet, and toes, including arthritis, sports injuries, corns and calluses, as well as other causes of discomfort.

Mr Taylor said: “Foot care is really important, and we want to help keep people fit and active to promote healthy hearts, lungs and minds. People often neglect their feet, and foot pain often increases as lesser toes are crowded by the big toe and its turning outwards.”

Mr Farrar added: “The only cure for bunions is to have an operation to remove them. There are several types of procedures available and patients should be able to return home the same day. Risks of bunions returning are further reduced if surgery is performed by an experienced consultant orthopaedic surgeon that specialises in foot and ankle surgery.”
