For the second year, Buckholme Towers School and Nursery is giving children aged six to eight years old the opportunity to apply for a scholarship with the aim of joining the school as a pupil in September 2014. Headmaster Iain Robertson explains:

“We offer scholarships to students who show exceptional academic ability in areas such as maths and English as well as the non-academic fields of art, music, sport and drama. Those awarded scholarships are eligible for up to 50 per cent discount on the current tuition fees.

“On Saturday 8th February at 9.30am we are holding examinations for current Buckholme pupils as well as external candidates in Year’s 2, 3 and 4. Students will be tested in their reading comprehension and spelling ability, English writing, mathematics and verbal and non-verbal reasoning. Children entering the non-academic exams are required to show evidence of their potential such as certificates or to perform in music or drama. Parents will be able to meet senior staff and have a tour of the recently refurbished school.

“For current Buckholme students, a scholarship scheme is a way of recognising their potential above and beyond the already high standards of the school. External candidates will be welcomed into a family environment where traditional values are at the heart of everything we do. We believe wholeheartedly in the advantages of small classes and teaching the children on an individual basis.

“Because assessment is part of the culture at Buckholme, our pupils quickly learn to take it in their stride. Most go on to do public examinations such as the 11 plus, for grammar school in which a large percentage of our students go on to achieve places. This is undoubtedly a success criterion for many of our parents. Pinpointing their strengths early on and celebrating their successes and achievements at every opportunity means that self-esteem and confidence are high.

“Music, sport, drama and art are high on the agenda at Buckholme and with the ‘can do’ culture that exists, most become involved in everything that is on offer. In this way, every child is happy because they have something to celebrate.”
